The shifting tide
In her new masterpiece featuring private inquiry agent William Monk, New York Times bestselling novelist Anne Perry displays her prodigious writing talent. With insight, compassion, and a portraitist"s genius, Perry illuminates the shifting tide of emotions encompassing Queen Victoria"s London and the people who live there-aristocrats, brothel owners, thieves, Dickensian ruffians, and their evil keepers. She takes us through dangerous backstreets where the poor eke out their humble livings, and into the mansions of the rich, safe and secure in their privileged lives. Or so they believe. William Monk knows London"s streets like the back of his hand; after all, they are where he earns his living. But the river Thames and its teeming docks-where towering schooners and clipper ships unload their fabulous cargoes and wharf rats and night plunderers ply their trades-is unknown territory. Only dire need persuades him to accept an assignment from shipping magnate Clement Louvain to investigate the theft of a cargo of African ivory from Louvain"s recently docked schooner, the Maude Idris. Monk is desperate for work, not only to feed himself and his wife, Hester, but to keep open the doors of Hester"s clinic, a last resort for sick and starving street women. But he wonders: Why didn"t Louvain report the ivory theft directly to the River Police? Why did he warn Monk not to investigate the murder of one of the Maude Idris crew? Even more mysterious, why has Louvain brought to Hester"s clinic a desperately ill woman who he claims is the discarded mistress of an old friend? Neither Hester nor Monk anticipates the nightmare answers to these questions, nor the trap that soon so fatefully ensnares them. In this magnificent novel, Anne Perry holds the reader spellbound, as Monk and Hester struggle to save themselves and their world from a catastrophe whose dimensions they can scarcely measure.

This is the first Anne Perry book I have read in a long time. Reading it on my Kindle made all the difference. I love a mystery and I love novels with British settings. The river played a big part in the book but the title, The Shifting Tide, also gives meaning to many of /5().
Monk tried to imagine the scene: the cramped spaces in the bowels of the ship, the floor shifting and tilting with the tide, the creaking of the ship’s timbers. And then would come the sudden knowledge that there were footsteps, then the terror, the violence, and Brand: Random House Publishing Group.

The Shifting Tide. Written by Anne Perry Review by Ilysa Magnus. The fourteenth installment in Perry’s William Monk series is, once again, set in Victorian London – full of filth and disease, scoundrels and the worst dregs that London can produce.
At the same time, Perry puts The shifting tide book mirror up to the goodness, the decency, the willingness of human beings to sacrifice for one another inherent in every culture at any.
The Shifting Tide William Monk Mystery Series, Book 14 William Monk Mystery by Anne Perry. Anne Perry can always be counted on to write an exciting historical police procedural and THE SHIFTING TIDE is obvious proof of this assertion. Hester and Monk battle with more than a serial killer and that brings the focus of the tale as much on the nurse fighting a deadly disease as the hero trying to get an innocent man off death row.
(The Shifting Tides #1) The discovery of a strange and superior warship sends Dion, youngest son of the king of Xanthos, and Chloe, a Phalesian princess, on a journey across the sea, where they are confronted by a kingdom far more powerful than they could ever have imagined.4/5.
This is the first book in a young adult fantasy series (the Shifting Tides) set in an imaginary world with imaginary creatures. There are two main protagonists: Chloe daughter of the First Consul of Phalesia and Dion, second son of the king of Xanthos.
The two countries border each other/5(K). The Shifting Tide marks a crucial, transitional episode in both the author’s vision of the Monks’ world and in her characters’ lives. I am completely enamored with this.
Copper Chain is the third novel in his highly anticipated new series, The Shifting Tides, following Silver Road. When he isn’t writing or traveling, James enjoys sailing, snowboarding, classical guitar, and /5().
The first book in an epic fantasy series by James Maxwell, author of the bestselling Evermen Saga. War is coming to Xanthos.
The king refuses to face the truth, but his overlooked second son, Dion, can see the signs: strange warships patrolling, rumors of a new tyrant across the sea, and the princess of a neighboring land taken hostage.
Silver Road (The Shifting Tides Book 2) by James Maxwell is a book I had bought but forgot and then won by Goodreads. I am glad I did or I would have missed out on reading a great book for a long time.
I didn't read the first book but I was able to jump right in to this without any problems, the writer smooths the path for the reader and off you go/5. True, where the mystery subplot is concerned, things may be a little lacking; however if you look at the novel as an examination of human nature, at the unexpected strengths and hidden frailities of the characters involved, "The Shifting Tide" then becomes the compelling must read novel that it rightly is, whether or not you are a mystery m Monk has been hired by shipping magnate 5/5(6).
Devouring fantasy and science-fiction classics from an early age, his love for books translated to a passion for writing, which he began at the age of eleven. Inspired by the natural beauty around him but also by a strong interest in history, he decided in his twenties to see the world/5(K).

Gripping from the very start, I just wanted to keep turning the page to get to the next instalment. Fast paced, kept me wanting to read the next chapter, late switching off the lights on many occasions/5(K). Third book in James Maxwell's Shifting Tides series and I Ioved it! Best book in the series so far.
Maxwell seems to do an odd thing with his 4-book series; they're almost two series in one. I found when reading the Enchantress series that after two books, there is a huge breath, I was a little confused why there were more books, he seemed done/5().One part of an author’s job, especially when writing fantasy, is good world building.
In James Maxwelll’s new novel Golden Age ( pages), part of his Shifting Tides series of books, this comes very easy as he has just taken the ancient Mediterranean with its Greek and Egyptian cultures firked with the map and changed some names to protect the innocent.
